A ring-a-ding ring-in

What do you think about NSW getting McCullum on board for the 2020 final?

Certainly on other cricket sites/news sites the attitude is that it stinks! Even being compared to the underarm delivery in that while it is legal, it is "not cricket!"

This has caused a knock-on affect where T.Dodemaide has stated he would like to get A.Gilchrist in for the match... or S.K.Jehova (I now will be taking a break to clean up the mess around me due to this proposal)!

Is this a joke? Does this practice lessen the value of the competition?
Comparisons have been made to the 3 Pakistani players here at the moment, but they have been playing all/most of the season and ARE a part of their current teams; not ring-ins for a final.

And then there is the A.Symonds comments, "That's not Australian to me." http://wwos.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=731843
It reads to me as a gift to the media to add an extra -mostly irrelevant - comment into the controversy; what does that really achieve? Is it just another way of letting Symonds slam his foot into his gob? Or is it Symonds trying to uphold his profile while recuperating?
Now don't quote me on the speaker- i think he was introduced as T.Moody (didn't here as i was in traffic!), but a reply to Symonds saying this was, "...that's a bit much of a comment from someone taking millions from the IPL!" If it was Moody (I'm pretty sure it was, but i haven't been able to find the quote on the radio stations website), what was his point? How was Symonds being bought and paid for by the IPL relevant to the McCullum situation?

So many question for you to address. My belief is Cricket NSW is desperate, selfish and frankly pathetic in doing this; i want to see McCullum go first ball, and grass every catch coming his way as well as miss fielding returns (although i have since been informed he is playing only as a batsman) for 4 byes frequently! Or am i just a surly Vic?

I don't blame McCullum, it is his career and he will do what he thinks is best for him (including giving himself 2 chanced at the Champions league now with Kolkata and NSW), it is just weak of Cricket NSW to try to field a team better than they have had throughout the competition from an outside source.

  1. The NSW team has such a proud tradition and is not in any way affiliated nor ever has been with CA or the ACB. They have had the most Test playes and something something whatever.....I am sure that picking a NEW ZEALANDER in their team is just business (and I do mean BUSINESS) to them.
There are so many ways that this critisism could go but I think that the base line is that this is why Sydney is not the capital of the sporting world (wouldn't even come in in the top 100). They (in my opinion) are on a hiding to nothing: if they lose, well they lose, but if they win it would be so hollow as to not mean anything at all.

I would be embarrassed to be from NSW.

  2. Blokes like Sir Garfield Sobers have played in Aus domestic cricket for decades. Symonds is as stupid as he is shit at cricket. In any case it's 20/20 chicken - who cares? Anything goes in this rubbish - why don't Vic try to channel the spirit of some old player? Ponsford, where was your name-sake from? You're right - it's just business. As if the owners of the IPL teams necessarily give a toss about (best pun on this blog) or even know anything about cricket. As long as they get money (and maybe a bit of chicken) they're happy.

  3. yep, and EVERYONE and his dog has played seasons of county cricket; the emphasis on SEASONS! It is the last minute call up that bowls me over (2nd best pun!). in district cricket you must play a nominal amount of games to get a finals berth, why is this different? got me stumped! (3rd)

NSW have said they wanted Macman all season but he was unavailable... probably something to do with an Australian then WI series; so really, therefore he is not part of the team just because they WANTED him. No doubt i'd get a stink on if two other states were involved because it is just wrong.

i think there is little doubt LRO that the IPL topnobs couldn't give a flaming-monkeys-bollock for much more than the dollars, but as a game-whore i'm happy for the season not to run-out (oh dear!) in any way it takes.

  5. You're swingning wildly looking to get nicks Stoph! I love it.
Agreed that it is the absence of rules for 20/20 preventing ring-in players that's the problem. It becomes an issue of sportsmanship for NSW cricket who have shown disdain for normal protocol and further highlighted the frivolous and petty nature of 20/20 chicken. You're right about district level, but does the same apply for state? I've got a feeling that Lee could play in the shield final without having played a game for NSW all season (if they were playing in the final obviously). Does anyone know? Even at local level qualification rules exist. I'm in that situation now where I've played too many weeks of B grade so even if I play the remaining 6 games of C grade (one dayers) I won't qualify as I would have played 7 weeks of B grade (2 dayers). I believe this is fair though as sides can be severely disadvantaged otherwise.
It's not in the spirit of sport but really because it's 20/20 chicken I couldn't care less. If it was real cricket (even 50 over stuff) I'd write to Kevin 07 to complain.

  6. i think you are right about state games LRO... but i don't know for sure the ins and outs of it all, that's why i like to be so opinionated (close my eyes and swing!)!
