so, when the Ashes is done and dusted and we cement our place at #5 in the test rankings with a humiliating defeat on home soil to a better organised and structured England team that has played with a sense of purpose not just survival, what will need to happen to lift cricket in Australia and what shake up of Cricket Australia must eventuate to avoid further seasons in the abyss. (how was that for a run-on sentence!?)
All of us here at DTW have lamented the lack of foresight from first ACB (during the 80's retirements) and CA (during the 2000's retirements), so what can we suggest as a vision for the future and to change the culture of, "we're great, and always will be....D'oh! What just happened?
suggestions:
CA bow and grovel before St D.K and beg for his return as head bowling coach.
"......................" St S.K and beg him to come and be spin bowling coach and give tactical seminars to ALL state and national captains coaches and VC's.
Revamp the academy and tour it around the country- intensively. Including smaller scale grass roots visits to clubs on training nights. Yes there are a lot of clubs in the country, but this is where young people start so it should be for CA if they want to implement long term change.
organise genuine kids clinics that double as talent scouting ops. i say genuine because the one i took my boy to that was touted as such didn't even look at the little kids- even though it was stated they would, and only concentrated on the 15 and 16 year olds.
expand the CA contract system (much like SL have) to incorporate more and younger players... and guarantee that with performance, opportunities to represent will happen.
Performance based contracts for current squad; it removes doubt and speculation- if your numbers don't hold up, one of the other contracted young 'uns is ready.

Can a brother get a contract
Well, we have the contracted players for 2009/2010. Breakdown by state:
TAS - 2
NSW - 10
SA - 2
QLD - 2
WA - 4
VIC - 5
Thank you to selectors for allowing 15 out of 25 spots to come from outside NSW: very gracious indeed. With the size of Qld I'm amazed they could find 2 players worthy of contracts. Tassie gets two token players: one of which is the Aus captain who lives in Sydney and hasn't played for his state since the 1940s. Callum Ferguson gets a deserved gurnsey and Manou is rightly in as a back-up keeper who will no doubt get a go when Haddin is rested (maybe he'll captain at some stage).
Siddle is an obvious one from Vic as he has a heart bigger than Phar Lap and produces similar results. The biggest surprise to me is another Victorian: what was his name? That bloke who made heaps of runs for Aus and has continued to do so for his state. Ah - Brad Hodge. Excellent to see him back and selectors talking up his chances (in some media and downplaying chances in others) - which of course, through giving him a contract many people would not have expected, they are obliged to do. Let's hope they show courage and drop M. Hussey for Hodge so he can demonstrate what selection based on merit is all about.
Play some cricket, Tait, and you may earn back your contract.
Jacques, unfair as it may seem a bloke 10 years younger has got your dosh and I don't think he'll be surrendering it any time soon. Thanks for your efforts but goodbye.
White, contracts seem to be based on all forms of the game it appears. Never will we see you in whites but, you lucky bugger, you don't need to wear them to get a contract.
So, have we got a mix that covers all bases? We've seen before that selectors will get in non-contracted players to fill spots: Katich is a good example of a good decision. I'm pleased to see Marsh in the list as there's something about him that tells me he'll shine in years to come. One spinner: now that tells us something. North, Clarke, Katich and Symonds can expect to roll the arm over a fair bit. The problem I see there is, well, problems, is that I don't think any of them could be guaranteed of being able to. North hasn't proved his worth with the ball at international level, Clarke has back problems and is in the team predominantly to bat, Katich doesn't like bowling in tests, and Symonds likes fishing too much (and booze, swearing etc).

Pay to Stay and Play
More money for Australian contracted players; plus less commitments. Is the national side getting a bit full of themselves, or are they worth it? What do you think?
Let's look at the pros and cons:
1) The 11 players on the field represent our entire country; so therefore they are our elite. This should entitle them to remuneration that acknowledges them as such.
1a) Many players that pursue cricket show enough talent in other sports to put them in a position of having to choose ultimately which sport will serve them best, (or which one they have the most skill at).
2) Money is now flooding into the game via India, if CA are not prepared to ensure a player can effectively secure his financial future, why wouldn't players choose a career playing hit and giggle for the duration of their playing career?
3) With tour and sponsorship commitments (22 appearances a year- no more than 4 in any given month) on top of away time -up to 10 months a year, players need to capitalise on their money earning years to partially negate the lost time with families.
4) Players already earn incredible sums of money, (M.Clarke was 7 figures last year!). If you are in the national side, and are getting $5100-$12750 (plus OS loadings) in match fees, or nearly $700 a run, be grateful you represent your country and are raking it in... other representative sports-people pay their own way!
5) Cricketers are housed, fed, transported and catered for medically as soon as they are in the national side... no additional expenses.
6) On top of their CA money, cricketers receive huge amounts from sponsorships and endorsements- how dare they request less time doing such work.
I for one think that if they can get more from CA, why not! For top ranked players the draw of a few seasons of T20 in India must always be in the back of their minds; if you could earn a yearly income with only three months away, why wouldn't you? The privaledge of having played for your country won't pay the bills when you are too old to earn money from cricket!
